today my address box with earthlinkin was hacked, over 300 emails were sent with I am told very bad attachments. How do I keep this from happening again. What security precautions are there?

Change your password in MyAccount and use the recommendations shown on that page for keeping your account secure.

My account has been sending emails I did not write. I was suprised to actually see them in my sent folder. I thought it may be a worm, but I am concerned they were found in my sent folder in webmail but not my outlook folder. What actions should I take to stop this.

Change your password in MyAccount and use the recommendations shown on that page for keeping your account secure.

Messages sent from Web Mail won't show up in your Outlook program, that will only show what was sent using that program.

For the past few weeks, SpamBlocker has not been working properly. I have always had it set for Suspect Email. I didn't change any of the settings, but for the past few weeks, nothing goes to the "Suspect Email" folder anymore. "Known Spam" is still working properly and catches known spam emails. But everything else goes directly to my Inbox - whether it's coming from an address in my Address Book or not. (In fact, even a number of very obvious SPAM emails with very X-rated subject lines have gone directly to my Inbox.) This never happened before.

I double-checked my SpamBlocker settings and everything is correct. In fact, I even tried turning a few settings off, saving them, and then turning them on again to try to "kick-start" it back to work. But the problem is the same. I have detailed my settings for you here (below).
I see that Earthlink did upgrade and make some changes in SpamBlocker recently. I suspect that the problem I am having may be related to a bug in that upgrade.

Here are my settings are as follows:
Suspect Email Blocking - YES
SPAM from known Addresses (Save to my Inbox) - NO
When I report a message as Not Spam ("This Is Not Spam"):
---Move message to my Inbox -YES
---Add sender to my address book (if not present already) -YES
Send me a spamBlocker email summary: DAILY
Blocked Sender List
Empty my Suspect Email Folder every: NEVER
Send an Allowed Sender Request to unknown senders (who aren't in my Address Book): OFF
Delete Known spam immediately (do not save it in my Known spam folder): OFF

Can you offer any insight to this problem?
Thank you very much!

On top of everything else, now that you added this top left ads area--you did it in a way that made your screen wider than mine, so that I'd have to scroll to the right to read EVERY LINE of EVERY EMAIL. (I am in Classic mode, which I have to be in.) Earthlink, this may be your last chance to redeem yourself as far as myself and everyone I know. When will you fix it??

We're looking at this now. As you noted, it only affects users who have opted to use the old interface, and then only those with a 1024 or smaller width display.

I don't know of any reason that you would have to use the "classic" mode other than it being your preference or if you are using a very old browser version. Is there something that doesn't work right for you if you choose the newer version?

where can I find the "blocked sender's list"? the techie I spoke with didn't have a clue!

Click on Preferences / spamBlocker and then scroll down to about the middle of that page.

Good morning, received an email yesterday "Account Upgrade/Maintenance of All Web mail Accounts", asking me to reply giving my username, password, date of birth. Full email is below, am wondering if this is legitimate or a scam? Thanks so much!

Any such email is always a scam, 100% of the time. EarthLink will never ask you for account information in an email.

Wow. I see you responded to all of the comments before mine and after mine - but not to mine (posted July 26, 2012 #2978). Yet the problem with "Suspect Email Blocking" continues and none of Earthlink's customer service reps have any idea what I'm talking about or if there is a bug in your system.

We've been unable to reproduce the behavior you described but are looking into it. Try changing the

SPAM from known Addresses (Save to my Inbox) - NO

to YES and see what happens.

We have been encouraging the use of BBC when sending to a group so the addy's are kept private. The problem is the BBC box is only one line. It will not expand as the TO box does. Please consider changing the BBC box to accomodate addresses like the TO box.

My earthlink spell checker does not work all the time. Is there any quick fix you can supply.

Re: My comment # 2982) (Posted by: Alison - August 14, 2012 8:56 AM )

Thank you for your reply, which was "Try changing the SPAM from known Addresses (Save to my Inbox) - NO to YES and see what happens."

I tried it and it made no difference. Still getting all kinds of porn emails coming to my inbox, though MOST of them are still going to "Known Spam" but the "Suspect" folder still doesn't catch anything at all. So the problem continues, exactly the same as it's been for about a month and a half now.
This is, obviously, unrelated to my PC. This happens on any PC from which I access web-mail.
Please let me know if you or your colleagues are able to come up with any ideas.

If your Suspect Email folder is turned on by way of having spamBlocker set to High, normally the only way email can bypass that is for the sender to have put in a From address that is in your address book. Sometimes this is concealed in the headers and won't be visible to you by simply viewing the "From: " line displayed in the message. If you use the View Headers feature under the Actions menu, you can look at the other headers to see if a sender is spoofed in order to bypass your Suspect email folder.

Should i respond to this or assume it's just phishing? It looked authentic but I'm naturally suspicious.

It's a scam. The link doesn't go to an earthlink.net site, which is one tip-off you can watch for. EarthLink will also never ask you for your account information in an email.

Subject: force download of messages from server

How can I force/allow Thunderbird to download messages that are still on the Earthlink server but were apparently marked as already having been downloaded?

My wife and I use Thunderbird and POP to access our Earthlink Email accounts. Recently, through some unknown fluke, a number of her messages (hbjulie@earthlink.net) were marked as having been downloaded, but they never showed up in her Thunderbird Inbox. Everything else is working fine, including download of newer messages. The desired messages are still on the server, but I have not been able to get them to download, nor have I found a solution in a search of this forum. Is there a way of telling Thunderbird or Earthlink that these messages have NOT been downloaded, so that Get Mail will then download them?

Thank you for your reply (" If your Suspect Email folder is turned on by way of having spamBlocker set to High, normally the only way email can bypass that is for the sender to have put in a From address that is in your address book...)

Unfortunately, the information you gave me has nothing to do with the problem. I've been using Suspect Email Blocking (SpamBlocker set to High) since the first day Earthlink had it available. In other words, for years. Every day, I would have at least 25-40 emails in my Suspect Mail folder.
But...for the past two months, I have had zero emails in my Suspect folder. This is an Earthlink issue. This has nothing to do with anyone sending fishy emails.

About half the time when I write a Web Mail Message and click on Send, nothing happens and I get a message that "Sorry, an internal error has occured."and instructing me how to get back to Web Mail. This is frustrating and something should be done to stop these occurances.

Re: My comment # 2982 (Posted by: Alison - August 14, 2012 8:56 AM )

Just want to give you an update. Once again today, I went into my settings and changed the SpamBlocker settings to Medium and saved it...then I changed it back to High and saved it...and this time it worked!!! Now I'm finally getting emails in my Suspect Mail folder again, after two months. I've done this before and it didn't work. Thank you for looking into the problem. I guess someone at Earthlink made a change somewhere and fixed the problem? Anyway, it seems to be solved.

Firefox and URL links -

there seems to be a problem with using the Firefox browser and pasting URL links... they don't show as hotlinks. When using IE, they do show as hotlinks when pasted into an email. I would hope that Webmail would work the same exact way with the more common browsers.

If not possible - then at least create a LINK icon (usual chain link symbol) for pasting.

We plan to do both soon. Firefox doesn't handle those natively like IE does.

Bugs - Fixes - years & logs

It appears that Earthlink can add new window dressing (fonts, etc) to the Webmail interface, but still have bugs from 3, 4, or even 5 years ago as per this blog. Each one of the bugs that I have recently encountered has an entry here for years ago - with no current fix, resolution, or response.

In addition - since I'm an actually email paying customer of what $6/month - why do I get the same ads as any free site ?

With a Premium Mail account (which you have) Customer service can convert you to no ads at no extra charge.

Two concerns/questions ...

1. I often need to send more than three attachments in a single e-mail. How can I make that happen?

2. I know that addressee boxes (To, Cc, BCc) limit number of addressee. How do I increase the number of addressees?

CAM

1. The limit of 3 is only on the old Web Mail. Click on "Use New Web Mail" under the quota bar. That was changed about two years ago.

If you must use the old Web Mail, then add 3 attachments, save the message as a draft, reopen it, add 3 more, and send. That can be repeated more than once to add more.

2. The combination of all three lines is 100 addresses in Web Mail. They are not limited individually. If you want to send more than 100 recipients at one time use any email program like Outlook or Windows Live, not Web Mail.

One more thing ... Sometimes there is a 30- to 45-second delay (white space) between hitting Send and actual release of my message. Why? Other times I encounter the same delay but hit Send, get an error message, and I lose my message. Why?

I have a problem. I have accidentally moved some important mail into the trash folder and everal days later, I emptied the trash. Is there any way to recover this file? It is the last file I "emptied."

Hopefully,

SunAnne

No, once the Trash is emptied the deletion is permanent.

I understand instructions for setting Vacation Message but have 2 question : 1) How does Vacation Message work on a listserv from which multiple messages are sent each day-- Do all subscribers get Vacation Message every day? This would be way too annoying for valued colleagues. 2) Can Vacation Mesage be set to go to each email sender only once during the time away, not once every day? If outgoing message includes info about dates away, daily reminders shouldn't be needed and are a pain for people who send information about shared projects frequently. Have not used Vacation Message in the past because of these issues & that creates other problems when email accumulates unread read for several weeks. Thanks!

The vacation message will go out once per day per unique sender. So if the account receives multiple messages on the same day that have the same From address, only one vacation message will be sent back in reply to the very first message. The day starts over at midnight ET.

Unable to delete any anonymous email addresses for the past 6 months. Get the following error message.

"We are unable to delete this ProtectionPack ID at this time. Please try again later."

This should be fixed now.

Thank you, Delete function appears to be working now except for the anonymous address that starts with "unsay". Still getting error message for that one. If somebody on your end could delete that address or fix the problem so I could delete it, would appreciate it. I contacted customer support about that one a few months ago, was told they would delete it but that never happened.

I have deleted that for you.

I forward my email very day to my work, then at the end of the day I go back to the webmail site to stop it from forwarding. For about 2 months now, I have to check the box and go back in to do it again because somehow, it 'unchecks' itself. I was only happening to one of my email addresses but yesterday, it started with another one. It is VERY frustrating! I have even changed my password but no luck. Any thoughts?

Thanks,Tracy

Just be sure to click on the Save button after editing the Forwards page, and when the page refreshes just click on Forwards again to view the current setting. I will also check if anything is not working right on saving that.
